

The Salem Witch Hunts were instigated by children making up stories to punish adults they felt needed to be taught a lesson. Yet we are a society that would never take the word of a vindictive child over a responsible teacher. Or would we?
Imagine, if you will, two students in a high school Spanish Class, a young man and woman thrown together by the wheels of fate. Imagine their teacher, a mean spirited wretch who would not allow them to sit together, assigned mucho homework, and made their classroom a hostile environment. Could they get her comitted if they so choose?
It is, of course, only blind speculation that wronged students could have their more aggressive teachers committed, yet it does raise the inevitable question of how far society will allow itself to be pushed by the hateful. Afterall, is not habitual cruelty a sign of some sort of defect? Should we not correct it?
Those in positions of power should realize the power held by their inferiors, and understand the ramifications of a hastily pointed finger. When accusations fly, even the innocent and sane may not be able to seek shelter.
The students never accused their teacher, yet on some level, beneath the smiles and laughs, there is the dark thought that maybe, just maybe, the asylums could use one more...
